Fundamentals of Roadway Geometric Design is an ATAP series of online learning courses. Each course consists of a one-hour video that can be viewed on your time, anytime! This series includes five courses.
Course 4 (Vertical Alignment and Sight Distance) presents an overview of the process for establishing the vertical alignment of a roadway. Concepts to be considered and associated calculations are presented with examples. The concept of stopping sight distance, and how to provide it through vertical curves, is also discussed. This course will be useful as a refresher for the seasoned road designer. It will also provide insight for other transportation professionals into the decisions that a road designer makes in defining the vertical alignment.
