The objective of this course is to develop an understanding of the Superpave test procedures, specifications, and consensus properties for aggregates used in production of asphalt mixtures. Generic test procedures for acceptance of aggregates will be demonstrated. The following test procedures will be covered: sampling aggregates; materials finer than No. 200 (0.075 mm) sieve; unit weight and voids in aggregate; sieve analysis in fine and coarse aggregates; reducing field samples of aggregate to testing size; method for determining flat and elongated pieces in coarse aggregate, Los Angeles abrasion, soundness loss as well as specific tests related to friction and polishing properties.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this training course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference between Superpave source and consensus properties
- Determine the Toughness (Los Angeles Abrasion) of aggregates
- Test aggregates for soundness and resistance to weathering
- Determine consensus properties such as fine and coarse aggregate angularity, and clay content (Sand Equivalent)
TARGET AUDIENCE: This course is designed for aggregate quarry, contractor, and agency personnel who are involved in the quality control and acceptance decisions regarding aggregate production and use. In addition, owner/agency personnel such as project engineers, roadway inspectors, and testing technicians will benefit from an understanding of the various aggregate properties and why they are so important.

Jason MooreJason Moore has worked as a Laboratory Research Engineer for NCAT for 7 years and is currently serving as Laboratory Manager. His duties include scheduling, managing, and conducting research, analyzing data, and preparing technical reports. He also assists in preparing proposals and developing work plans for research. He is responsible for maintaining AMRL accreditation for the NCAT laboratory. His laboratory research work has required extensive use of laboratory performance testing equipment such as the MTS, AMPT, IDT, and bending beam fatigue apparatus. He is very knowledgeable of laboratory test procedures and requirements including sample preparation, testing frequencies, and test temperatures required for a variety of hot mix asphalt laboratory performance tests. In addition to his laboratory experience, Mr. Moore has taught several special training courses involving extensive knowledge of asphalt technology. He has also taught technician training and certification courses regarding Asphalt Plant QC/QA testing, Roadway Technician responsibilities, and Aggregate Technician duties. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Alabama.
