Every engineer, regardless of their discipline, is, or will be, responsible for managing projects. There are many different types of projects, such as construction projects, optimization projects, and process improvement projects. All of these projects follow the same general sequence: initiation, planning, execution, and closure. Along the way, the project manager must stay abreast of, or "Control", the activities of the project. Therefore, activity definition and sequencing are critical planning requirements. However, once the project reaches the execution phase, many activities are occurring simultaneously, and can be overwhelming to the project manager without a system in place to control the progress of the project. Earned Value Analysis is a tool that has gained much attention primarily because it is a standard approach to controlling the project time and costs. Many customers and clients are embracing earned value analysis because it provides a quantitative gauge that is quick and simple. Learning Objectives: The participant will be able to: Understand the importance of defining the project activities in way that can be easily monitored and controlled. Understand the need to accurately sequence the activities such that activity dependencies can be established and critical path(s) can be established. Calculate the schedule variance and schedule performance indicator at any point during the execution phase of a project. Calculate the cost variance and cost performance indicators at any point during the execution phase of a project. Calculate the cost estimate at completion of the project and the expected completion time at any point in the project.

Mark Clark

Mark Clark has a dual appointment in the College of Business at Auburn University. He serves as a Management Scientist in the Auburn Technical Assistance Center and he also serves a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Aviation and Supply Chain Management Department. Dr. Clark has a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and specializes in the area of production and operations management. He has eight years of experience in the pulp and paper industry, and served as a process engineer for approximately three years before joining the management team at one of the International Paper production facilities. In the classroom, Dr. Clark teaches Quality Management, Project Management, and Quantitative Methods at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is also an instructor in the Executive MBA Program. Dr. Clark has been in his current role since 1998.
