This course is presented in a four part series designed to give construction industry and transportation agency personnel a better understanding of the various steps in performing an asphalt mix design to meet specification criteria. Participants will be provided with a brief overview of asphalt mix design history and various design methods used in the past so they will better understand the development of current design procedures. Topics will include aggregate blending, batching of materials, volumetric mix design, mix design analysis, and typical specification parameters.

Don Watson

Mr. Don Watson has over 40 years experience with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and other construction materials. Prior to joining NCAT in August, 2001, Mr. Watson served for 32 years with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and retired as Assistant State Materials and Research Engineer. He is currently responsible for directing the NCAT training program which typically involves about 700 participants annually. The courses regarding asphalt technology, asphalt mixture design and construction, and various technician certification courses involve knowledge of materials and technical requirements for asphalt mix design, pavement design, HMA production and construction, and pavement maintenance and management systems. Mr. Watson is also Principal Investigator of several current research projects, and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Georgia.
